55 South, Franklin, TN

55 South in Franklin, TN, has it going on!  I stopped by after a meeting at the fantastic Williamson County Public Library with its energetic director.  I shall start with the toasted marshmallows.  Totally superfluous but delightful garnish.  This BP is chocolate and I don't have any idea what else was in it.  Apparently the restaurant changes flavors often, and you have to be "in the know" to know it's there prior to arriving.  I couldn't find it listed on any of the menus on the website.  It was perfectly firm in texture, and the taste was a lovely basic chocolate (I fear it had some barely detectable fancy ingredient and I'm doing a disservice).  I got it to go and ended up eating it cold, which should have been a no-no, but was a yes-yes!

55 South

Thanks to Beth of Eat.Drink.Smile.http://www.eat-drink-smile.com/, who enthusiastically recommended this BP at the Nashville Food Bloggers Holiday Shindig.

A shout out to Wine with Lisa, who swears this Louisiana BP with Buttermilk Bourbon Sauce is the best ever.  I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, even though it has raisins.

Butternut-Chard-Cheddar for the Nashville Food Bloggers Holiday Shindig

To debut the new version of the ratings, the forks, I review the Butternut-Chard-Cheddar Bread Pudding that I made. I found this relatively low fat (but high effort) recipe on A Veggie Venture.  It was well worth the effort, though I wish I had a sous chef to peel and chop the squash and wash and cut the chard.  The butternut, cheddar and sage melded wonderfully and the chard added a feel of rightness.  I used Great Harvest's Rosemary/Olive Oil bread as a base.  The custard was simple to prepare and I only needed a little more milk (I used 1% instead of whole), admonished by the instructions to make sure each piece of bread was moistened.  I will likely upgrade myself to four forks when I let the mixings soak together for a while longer before baking.  It was good!

I am so thankful for the incentive, which was the Nashville Food Bloggers Holiday Shindig.  It was my coming out party for the blog.  What a wonderful, diversely-inspired group of food writers.  I had no idea that people knew about it, so thank you, viewers!  And thank you to Lisa of Wine with Lisa for helping me add the email widget to the blog.

It was not the finger food that the Nashville Food Bloggers Holiday party specified, but hey, I write about bread pudding, so what was I to do?  Maybe I'll figure out a way to create bite sizes before the next event.

Oh, by the way, it's only 7 Weight Watchers points as an entree and 4 as a side.  It serves 8 or 16.

Many thanks to Teresa Blackburn for the lovely photos.  And a disclaimer because she is a professional food stylist, and there was a "glowy" lighting situation that defied her talent.

Copper Kettle, Nashville, TN

I ate this so fast I didn't take a photo.  I did not savor it, but it was wonderful.  Maybe next time.  I don't even know what flavor it was, it seemed almost like the cooks threw whatever they had in there.  I saw chocolate, tasted something like a lemon pudding, and had some dried fruit (not raisins).

Marche Artisan Foods, Nashville, TN

This stuff is scrumptious!  Marche makes a different bread pudding flavor each day, I think.  This one was almond currant.  Thank you, chef!  I don't know how Marche missed my list thus far, but I'm so glad I happened by.  The texture was perfect, and the sauce was a lovely vanilla with a hint of something that made it similar in flavor to a custard.

The portion size depicted is smaller than they usually serve.  It made me feel virtuous and it was truly just enough.

BrickTops, Nashville, TN

This gets a 2 only because of the lovely firm and consistent texture and lack of raisins.  For flavor, it gets a 1.  The whipped cream was flavorless, like air. I would have rather had fake topping.  The BP taste was a bit above bland. It was indistinct. Even the vanilla sauce was meh.  It had a slight liquor flavor, really light, maybe like it was made with extract, even if I could see the beans.  I'm not eager to experience this again.

Sweet 16, Nashville, TN

Several Nashvillians told me if I like BP, Sweet 16 is the place to go.  They're closed for a few weeks in the summer and close at 2:00 pm during the week so I made a few misses before I struck gold.  The look and smell alone got me.  Just look at it!  Imagine it warm, with rich gooey chocolate layer not too dark but enough to linger and when it was heated, the chocolate ran onto the plate.  There was a floral taste, which the owner told me was from the nutmeg and Yazoo beer.  I couldn't taste the beer, it was there to bring dimension to the chocolate.  The light and dark bread was pretty with cube topping for a crust.  I had a nice chat with the owners. By the way, the owners got a crop of hatch chili peppers and have been using it in a number of recipes, sweet and savory.  The hatch chili soup gave my tastebuds pause and for some reason the presence of seeds was welcome because it gave texture to a not quite pureed veggie broth with potato and onion.

Firefly Grill, Nashville, TN

Talk about some kind of good! This was a savory BP with different types of mushrooms and fresh herbs. It was made with challah AND brioche so it was buttery tasting and flaky and fresh and crisp at the top, formed in a muffin tin. It was the size of a dinner roll and that was just right to give a hot different texture from the crisp asparagus, arugula/almond/beet salad, and sauteed spinach. I will back to Firefly Grill.

Sunset Grill, Nashville, TN - CLOSED

CLOSED - My first thought when I tasted this butterscotch-habanero bread pudding was, "I want to kiss the creator in the mouth." Butterscotch with a small kick of habanero is just perfect. I am so glad I finally heeded the recommendations. And the sauce, again, made me want to have sauce everywhere, on everything.

Riff's Food Truck, Nashville, TN

This will be a mixed review, starts low and ends high. I know this picture on the left looks like fried chicken with a piece of white bread but it's bread pudding. It was supposed to be chocolate, a debut at the Celebration of Culture, and it was a disaster. I had to tell the truck manager and learned was that there are two BP construction techniques: 1) laying slices of bread and putting seasonings in the middle, and 2) tearing pieces of bread and mixing the seasonings (my preference). Both are soaked. Well, this one wasn't soaked enough because when I put my fork in, I turned over a piece of white bread. Gross! I decided against getting my money back because the other dessert was so good I asked for another instead. The dumpling in the banana leaf was a tastebud happiness consolation prize.

I tried again today at Food Truck Tuesday at the Second Harvest Food Bank. Before I dug in, I had the dreamy shrimp and grits, which could forego those tiny bland (veined) shrimp and just have the sausage and oh my gosh so sweet caramelized onions. My friend is right, calling it sausage and grits wouldn't have the same draw, but I digress.

Today's BP version was a BP with salted caramel sauce. It was just right in its approach and all the flavors were fully integrated, with some herb on top that gave it nice interest. Again, maybe it's my palate, but I didn't taste saltiness in the sauce though I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I'm glad I gave them another chance and also glad that the manager welcomed my constructive criticism.

Leon's, Decatur, GA

First, I was pleasantly surprised that this fancy place priced BP at $5.00. It's so fancy this was banana rye-whiskey praline bread pudding. Now, since I usually get my BP to go, I often lose the nuances of the flavors. It reminds me of one of my mother's favorite places in DC, Colonel Brooks Tavern, where they served different flavors of creme brulee but they all tasted the same. While I may not have a sensitive enough palate for the rye-whiskey, every bit of the offering was phenomenal!

The BP was toasted, which I always like. The banana flavor was light, and the texture was firm. Something strange seems to happen with bananas, in that they turn spongy and its like the flavor leaches out. Good for the BP, not so good for those banana remnants.

The real whipped cream...enough said. Y'all know I'm not a sauce fiend but the praline caramel sauce was divine.

The Ultimate Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding - Mine!

I give myself 4 slices, and so do my tasters. They said it was, "Awesome! Great flavor and consistency!" One person called me the next morning for the recipe because it was on her mind and taste buds. My most discerning taster said, "Balanced. Firm yet moist. Sweet, not obnoxiously so like a KK donut can sometimes be.Two thumbs up and a Mmmmmm Mmmmm!"

This isn't quite the holy grail of BP, but it could be the holy grail of calories, so my version is "light," meaning it has less eggs, less added sugar, and no cream unlike most recipes I've seen.

Jenifer's Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding

8 (or more - that's all that survived) Krispy Kreme (or other glazed) donuts, very dry (I let mine dry out for about 2 days past the expiration date). You can bake them for 20 minutes at 200 degrees to dry them out, also.
3 eggs
1 egg yolk
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
pinch cocoa powder (baking not hot chocolate)
big pinch cinnamon
enough milk to cover the donuts (I used 1 percent)

Tear donuts into smallish pieces. Whisk together all ingredients but milk. Pour over the donuts. If donuts aren't covered, add enough milk to almost cover them. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Bananas Foster White Chocolate Bread Pudding, Yellow Porch, Nashville

I adore the Yellow Porch so I just ordered the BP. It was a lovely day; the sun was shining but it wasn't too hot. I was content. The BP was intriguing. The sauce was tasty but the flavor feint, so I suppose it was the white chocolate. It had something in it that made it grainy, and I didn't figure out what it was. It wasn't unpleasant, just mysterious. The BP itself had a good firm texture, and I liked it though the bananas could have been riper/softer. I would order it again but ask more questions.

Sauce: Some kind, maybe white chocolate?

Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding, Burger Up, Nashville

You can tell this is becoming a mini-obsession. Burger Up is known for its innovative burger combinations and fresh ingredients, so how Krispy Kreme BP was added to the mix, I don't know. But I went with the aforementioned friend who had had it before and was not taken with it. After tasting it, I agree. It didn't resonate or form a permanent memory other than, "OK, I checked that one off the list." I give it 2 slices because my expectations were higher. It was custardy-tasting and soft, not quite icky, in the middle.

Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding - the ultimate indulgence

A friend invited me over for Krispy Kreme bread pudding. I had heard of this penultimate decadence, but was too afraid to make it by myself because, of course, I'd eat it all, fall into a deep sleep, and forget to pick my daughter up from daycare. The good news was that hers flopped, though she told me it was good the next day. She did a recipe from memory/intuition, so it was too moist to set. She tried grilling it and I called the donut croquettes. So we're going to try again soon.

Last night I heard about a place here in Nashville called Burger Up, a gourmet joint that serves KK BP. I will be stopping by sometime this week to try it, so I'll know what my friend and I should be shooting for. And maybe I'll have a burger, too. Thank goodness for Zumba, biking, aerobics, P90X and whatever else I do to compensate for this particular love of mine!

Oh, yeah, I did have Whole Foods' breakfast bread pudding from the food bar and it was satisfying but not worth adding another post.

Wild Hare, Nashville, TN

I knew that the Wild Hare would be one of my favorite places, just from reviews, the menu and website. I finally got there for lunch to celebrate a month of really good work, and saw Chocolate Caramel Bread Pudding was the daily special! It was meant to be! i'm having mixed feelings because it's not a regular item, but considering how my shorts feel today, that's a good thing. As you may be able to see from the photo, I got an order to go when I found out it was a limited feature.

Perfect. I know I've said it before about very different bread puddings, but this is perfection for today. I love the sliced and toasted approach. The slices were crisp on all edges and smoothly firm inside. It was cooked and mixed well. The BP was not too sweet, which allowed the chocolate to shine. The homemade whipped topping and two juicy ripe strawberries gave me choices about how to combine each bite. I didn't taste the caramel but I don't care. I will be back, but for now, I'm taking a nap.

Porch Cafe (Hilton Suites), Brentwood, TN

This is my first bread pudding in the Nashville area! The Porch Cafe was recommended and I happened to be in Brentwood the next day. The crust was delightful, but then it was almost underdone beneath. The flavor made me keep on plunging in my spoon, though I was always aware of the gumminess, and slightly ashamed. I think it was made from wheat bread. I was happy that it had no raisins, but then, yep, they showed up near the bottom and my heart fell. By the end, I felt like it was just sweet, and the ice cream was just cold. At most, it was worthy of a 2, elevated to a 2.5.

Jake Melnick's, Chicago, IL

Jake's is one of my favorite drop-in spots in Chicago. I worked around the corner and it has the best burgers, fries and nachos (oh, the ones with BBQ brisket are TDF). When I had a stressed morning or week, I would go there to commiserate with myself over some serious calories. I am so glad bread pudding was just added to the menu because if it had been there the whole time I worked around the corner I would not have been able to walk there for indulging. It's ridiculously indulgent and one of the few that I could not finish.

Zanzibar, Shaker Heights, Ohio

This was one of the worst I've ever had. Now remember, my reviews are just for the BP, not the food. The entrees, drinks and service were great enough to make my parents go back that same week a couple of times.

I took one bite and was grossed out. It was literally wheat bread slices layered with raisins. I could see the distinct slices and the raisins like it was a disgusting torte. It had no flavoring and my 4-year old could have done a better job at rendering a pudding.

New Orleans - Bread Pudding capital!

It's been a while since I updated the blog, but I've been diligent in my research (and need a copy of P90X or Hip Hop Abs as a result). I spent almost a week in New Orleans, Louisiana, and had all manner of bread pudding because it was my duty. I will start with the penultimate BP from Muriel's Jackson Square. It blew me away and deserves a scale of its own; four slices does not do it justice. The texture was pudding perfection (for me, firm and slightly chewy, well integrated, with a firmer top and a smooth look), the serving was plentiful but not obnoxious, the pecan topping gave it character, and the rum sauce knew what it was and what to do. Notice there's no whipped cream or ice cream. Muriel's knows this BP can hold its own. I would drive back to NOLA just to have more of this.

Now I can go in no particular order because the rest pale, however delightful they may have been prior to tasting Muriel's.

If you see bread pudding on the Acme Seafood menu, ignore it. I sent it back because it had no redeeming qualities. The texture was mush, the flavor was missing, and it was a ball of dough dumped into a pool of sauce. Ick.

Emeril LaGasse will live without me being impressed by the bread pudding at his eponymous restaurant. It's called warm sticky toffee pecan pudding cake and I thought it couldn't go wrong, but it did. The center was undercooked and for some unexplainable reason the pastry chef put a fruit with a skin in it (can't find my notes) and the skin was a total distraction from an already diminishing culinary experience. At least the ice cream was what it said it was, vanilla.

Dining al fresco at Court of Two Sisters was the perfect antidote to a stressful conference. The evening was blissful. The bread pudding was plum full of raisins but it tasted so good and buttery that I forgave it and my companion and I ordered two! It was soft and creamy and, did I say, buttery?

Palace Cafe's white chocolate BP is supposedly famous. I think it's slightly intriguing, and struck me more like an appetizer. The white chocolate is subtle, perhaps too much so. The texture is chewy, but too chewy, like I didn't get a fresh wedge. I liked the dark chocolate shavings.

These next three are just thrown in gratis - a plug for a fantastic breakfast at the Ruby Slipper. I didn't have a chance to get Bananas Foster so this French Toast version helped me not feel deprived. Wonderful service, too.

This pecan pie was artistically presented and quite tasty - certainly not the best I've ever had, but let me tell you that an evening at Commander's Palace can't go wrong. The homemade vanilla bean ice cream tasted like my mother's and that alone made the dessert special. I loved the salted caramel sauce!

This was also from Commander's Palace. I can't remember what it was, but the fresh whipped cream and ice cream filling were scrumptious. The outer ginger cookie was ok, but it did a fantastic job holding the dairy together.
